544,209. Automatic control systems for electric motors. TRIGGS, W. W. (Niles-Bement-Pond Co.). Feb. 4, 1941, No. 1485. [Class 38 (iv)] Speed. To control the speed and related torque of a repulsion motor 10 the primary winding of a transformer 13 is connected in the brush circuit and a thermionic tube 14 in the secondary circuit of the transformer is grid-controlled by a pilot generator 17 and a potentiometer 29, 30, for example, to determine and stabilize the speed. The grid circuit of the valve 14 includes a load resistance 21 for the rectified output of the pilot generator which biases the grid negatively, a positive D C. bias from a potentiometer 26 and a potentiometer 24, fed with A.C. of adjustable phase and amplitude, whereby the instant of ignition of the valve 14 is determined. A positive bias voltage from a potentiometer 42 prevents voltage appearing on the resistor 21 until the maximum voltage in the coil 18 of the pilot generator exceeds the brush voltage and prevents variation in the characteristic and speed regulation at different speeds.
