Abstract

544,024. Sewing-machines. FAIRWEATHER, W. C. (Singer Manufacturing Co.). March 4, 1941, No. 2913. [Class 112] Mechanism for actuating a trimming cutter and for putting it into and out of operation durthe running of the machine comprises toggle links 52, 54. Fig. 4, acting as an eccentric rod driving the cutter-operating shaft 38 from the main shaft 4, a stop 54<SP>1</SP> and a spring clip 58 for keeping the toggle straight and manual means for breaking and straightening the toggle. A shaft 60 is treadle-operated by means of a chain 63 and carries a toggle-straightening arm 67. It also carries a curved arm 70 upon which is pivoted a finger lever 72 with a togglebreaking arm 73. The levers 67, 70 are urged upwards by a spring 64 and are locked in the straightened toggle position by engagement of the arm 73, under a part 47'. When the finger lever is raised the arm 73 is moved from the part 47<SP>1</SP> and presses the toggle out of the straight. The lever 70 then rises under the action of spring 64 and the breaking of the toggle is completed. The upper cutter 17, Fig. 7, is clamped between a plate 20 and a part 19 carried at the lower end of a sliding bar 22. - The actuating pitman 35 is pivoted to a lug 31 on the plate 19 having supplementary guiding surfaces 29 sliding in a channelled guide-way 28 secured to the machine head. The fixed cutter. 77 is clamped to a plate 78 adjustable on the machine bed. A plate 89 pushes the trimmings through a hole in the work support on to a chute 93. Specification 529,748 is referred to.
