8 Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in combined seaming and pinking machines.
In some operations, it is desirable to locate the pinked edge as close to the line of scam as is possible, whereas in other operations this spacing may be increased within limits.
In machines as heretofore constructed, such as is shown in the patents to Popper 1,878,293, September 20, 1932 and 1,886,422, November 8, 1932, and in my prior applicationflled November 4, 1936, Serial No. 109,175, the stationary ledger blade is provided with a V-shaped opening to receive the vertically reciprocatory V-shaped knife which is maintained in yielding contactwith the edges of the ledger blade opening during each cutting stroke. The points of cutting move progressively towards the apex of the ledger blade opening and terminate when the two apices co- I0 incide. The knife which is slightly inclined to the vertical, is pivoted at its upper end to an oscil-. latory power driven knife arm, and spring means are provided for urging the knife towards the apex of the ledger blade opening. The apex of the ledger blade opening is spaced a short distance from the left edge of the blade in order to locate the pinked edge close to the needle. The pinking attachment which is mounted on the base plate of the machine for adjustments towards and from the needle, includes a base to which the ledger blade is attached. This ledger blade projects beyond the end of the attachment base and is located in. an opening in the base plate of the machine. Consequently the downblade. By reason of the fact that the ledger blade is supported at its right hand end only, said 'blade will tend to flex downwardly during the cutting stroke of the knife, and occasionally 0 when seams are fed across the blade the pressure of the knife results in the breaking of the blade at the weakest point thereof, viz., the apex.
It will be furthermore observed that in said Popper patents, the throat plate is provided with is a bar between the right hand feed dog accommodating opening and the ledger blade for supporting the fabric being pinked, and consequently the ledger blade cannot be adjusted closer to the needle than the width of said bar will permit. to This is objectionable because in some operations, it is desired to locate the line of pinks closer to the line of seam.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide means for supporting the ledger blade in a 58 manner which will prevent not only the flexing ward thrust of the knife is resisted by the ledger 1937, Serial No. 150,621
thereof during the cutting stroke of the knife, but also the occasional breaking of the blade at the apex of the opening thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for oiling the contacting cutting surfaces. of the knife and blade and thereby reduce the friction therebetween during the cutting stroke of the knife.
Another object of the invention is to eliminate the right hand bar of the throat plate whereby the left band edge of the ledger blade may be positioned in its place to thereby support the fabric and also locate the points of the pinks as close as possible to the line of seam.
With these and other objects in view which will more fully appear, the nature of the invention will be more clearly understood by following the description, the appended claims, and the several views illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a combined seaming and pinking machine embodying my invention,
Figure 2 is a horizontal section taken on the line 2--2 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a detail cross section taken on the line 33 of Figure 2, and
Figure 4 is a perspective view showing in separated relation the throat plate and the ledger blade.
ing parts throughout the several drawings.
Referring to the drawings, the sewing machine comprises a frame A which includes a base plate 5, a standard 6, and an overhanging arm I which terminates in a needle head 8. A vertically reciprocatcry needle 9 is mounted in the head 8 and is operatively connected in the usual manner to the main shaft III which is joumaled in the overhanging arm 1 whereby the needle will be reciprocated once for each rotation of said shaft.
The needle cooperates with a loop taker (not shown) located below the bed plate to form a line of stitches in the usual manner.
The base plate 5, directly below the needle, is provided with an opening II which extends longitudinally of the overhanging arm I and includes spaced front and rear longitudinally extending walls l2, Hi, the upper face of the base 5 along said walls being recessed to form longitudinally extending seats I, I 5 for receiving a throat plate B whereby the upper surface of said throat plate will lie substantially flush with the figures of the 2 arcane upper surface of the base plate I, the throat plate being rigidly attached to the bedplate by screws II, It.
The throat plate B is substantially U-shaped construction and includes spaced arms l1, II which extend longitudinally of the opening II, and an integral connecting bar It at the left end thereof. Abar it is alsointesral with said arms and is disposed in parallelism with the bar I. to form a resultant feed dog accommodating slot 2. therebetween. The arms l1, l1 thus project in a general plane at right angles to the slot 20. The bar O is provided centrally with an integral oii'set 2| which projects into the space between the arms l1, l1, and is provided with a needle opening 22. Brent and rear flanges 23, 22 which are integral with the inner edges of the arms H, H project inwardly towards each other, and their upper surfaces 24, 24 are disposed below the upper surfaces of the arms H, H to form supporting seats for the ledger blade C, the left ends of the flanges being spaced from the bar it to form resultant front and rear feed dog accommodating slots 2!, 28 which are respectively located in front and rear of the offset 2| containing the needle opening 22 and in open communication with the space between the arms l1, II. A vertically yieldable presser foot D is mounted on the head 8 in the usual manner for cooperation with the throat plate B to clamp the fabrics therebetween while the needle is in the fabrics and while the fabrics are being pinked by the vertically reciprocatory V- shaped knife E.
A i-motion feed dog F which is supported below the base plate I for cooperation with the presser foot, includes a feed section 21 which operates in the slot 20 of the throat plate 13 and alined front and rear feed sections 28, 29 which operate in the slots 25, 26 of said throat plate.
The ledger blade C is provided with spaced arms 30, 20 which are attached to a pinking attachment base G, and with a V-shaped opening forming converging cutting edges 3|, 3| and an apex 22. The cutting edges converge towards the needle, the apex is located centrally between the arms l1, II of the throat plate and in alinement with the needle, and the apex is spaced a short distance from the left edge of the blade. The attachment base G is mounted on the bed plate 5 for longitudinal adjustments towards or from the needle by means of a slot 33 formed in said base G and a clamping screw 24 which threadably engages an opening in the base plate 5. Thus, the ledger blade 0 can be readily shifted towards or from the needle to vary the distance between the line of seam and the line of pinks. The left hand edge of the ledger blade C can be positioned directly against the offset 2| of the throat plate, and consequently the apex 32 of the ledger blade opening will be positioned as close as possible to the needle to thereby permit of the narrowest spacing possible between the line of seam and the line of pinks. It will be observed that the flanges 23. 23 of the throat plate constitute a firm support for the ledger blade in any position of longitudinal adjustment thereof.
The knife E includes converging cutting walls ll, ll and is pivotally connected as at 28 to the free end of a knife lever 2'! which is fulcrumed on the attachment base G as at ll. A yieldable means 20, which is disclosed in my prior application referred to above, is interposed between the knife lever 21 and the knife and functions The blade is provided on opposite sides of the cutting edges 8|, 3| with integral and upstanding guide lugs 42, 42 which function not only to maintain the knife in proper registration with the ledger blade opening, but also to prevent the knife escaping said registration should the lower end of the knife during its upstroke be moved above the upper surface of the blade. These lugs are each provided with a downwardly inclined bore 42 extending from the upper outer corner of the lug to the lower inner face thereof, and an oil wick 44 is positioned in said bore for carrying oil or other lubricant to the cutting surfaces of the knife and blade.
The right hand side portion of the foot D overhangs the offset 2| and the left end of the ledger blade and thereby cooperates with the latter to clamp the edges of the fabrics against the blade between the intermittent feed strokes of the feed dog.
It is of course to be understood that the details of structure and arrangement of parts may be variously changed and modified without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
I claim:
