Abstract

338,193. British United Shoe Machinery Co., Ltd., and Keall, F. B. Aug. 15, 1929. Reciprocating-punch machines.-In a machine for ornamentally punching leather in which the punch is moved laterally to feed the work as described in Specifications 15555/08 and 208,240, (a) the work is fed substantially continuously at one time by the punch, at another by the presser and anvil, and at another time by the punch, presser, and anvil; (b) the work-feed is cut out or varied by adjustment of a single member; (c) the position of the punch (1) at the end of the punching movement, (2) at its slightly relieved position, (3) at its withdrawn position, are independently adjustably; (d) the paper-strip reels are arranged at the rear of, and beneath the base of, the machine, on substantially vertical axes. The punch 7 is secured to a spindle 12 rotatably mounted on a bar 18 to allow the punch to rotate in feeding round a curved portion, and is returned to normal position by a lever 19. A punch-bar carrier 24 is secured to a shaft 33. The punch-bar 18 is reciprocated by a cam lever 36 actuated by cam rolls 41, 42 on a shaft 40 rotated by the driving shaft. The lever 36 is mounted on an eccentric pin 37 adjusted by screw 43 for altering the position of the punch at the, bottom of its stroke. The cam 41 on an eccentric stub 44, Fig. 9, controls the slight rise of the punch during feed. A cam 42 on the concentric stub shaft 44 controls the punching. An arm 47 on the shaft 40 is adjusted by a screw 49 to vary the cam 41 and the slight lift, and a screw adjusts the lift of the punch after a feeding movement. An arm 53 reciprocates the shaft 33 by a cam on the shaft 6 oscillating a shaft 61, Fig. 5, and driving link 57 and sleeve 54 driving shaft 33. A link 59 connects, to the link 57, an adjustment lever 63. In punching position, the pivots of the linkage are in alignment so that adjustment of the feed by lever 63 does not alter the position of the punch. The presser 9 is carried by a bar 71, pivoted, on a pin 74, to lever 75 on a shaft 76, and is operated by a cam on the shaft 6. The bar 71 is connected by link 78 to an arm 79 on a shaft 80 carrying an arm 81 controlling a gear segment 83 pivoted on a shaft 85 and carrying an arm 86 connected to link 87 joined to links 88, 89. The link 88 is connected to the feed-adjusting arm 63. The link 89 is, connected to a cam lever 90 on the cam-operated shaft 91. When the presser is in its forward position, the pivot of arm 86, arm link 87 and the pivot of link 89 and lever 90 are in alignment, and adjustment of feed lever 63 does not move presser foot forward. If the lever 63 is adjusted to bring the pivot and the shaft 63 into alignment to cut out the feed movement of thepunch, the pivot of links 87, 88, 89 is brought into alignment with shaft 91 and feed movement of presser is cut out. A link 93 connects a shaft 95 operating the anvil 8 to the segment 83 and the anvil moves with the presser for work feeding movement. The work feeding movements of the punch 7 and the presser 9 and anvil overlap , and-, adjustment of the lever 63 to vary the length of. feed causes equal adjustion of all members. In a modification, movement of presser may be obtained by its clamping the work against the, anvil and being moved thereby. Work edge guiding means, Figs 10, 11, not shown, are provided. Paper strip is fed from a roll mounted for transverse adjustment by a screw operated leather faced table. The strip feeding mechanism is obtained through free wheel mechanism frpm. the punch and. presser foot mechanism so that when the work feed is varied the feed of the strip is varied also. Specifications 720c/07, [Class 80, Mechanism &c.]: 254,780, and 332,313, [Class 112, Sewing &c.], also are referred to..
