543,993. Carbocyanines. KENDALL, J. D. Sept. 20, 1940, No. 14415. [Class 2 (iii)] [Also in Group XX] The invention comprises compounds of the formula wherein X is a sulphur, oxygen, or selenium atom. R 1 and R 2 are alkyl or aralkyl groups, Y is an acid radical, n is 0, 1, 2, or 3, and at least one of the benzene rings contains a nuclear-substituted nitro group. Both of the atoms X may be sulphur atoms, and both benzene nuclei may contain a nuclear-substituted nitro group. Examples specified are 2:2<SP>1</SP>-diethyl-5:5<SP>1</SP>-dinitrothiacarbocyanine p-toluenesulphonate, 2:2' - dimethyl - 5:5<SP>1</SP>- dinitro - thiacarbocyanine p-toluenesulphonate, and 2:2<SP>1</SP>- dimethyl - 5:5<SP>1</SP>- dinitrothiacyanine p - toluene - sulphonate. Symmetrical carbocyanine compounds may be prepared by condensing the quaternary salt of a nitro-substituted 1-methyl benzthiazole (or oxazole or selenazole) with an alkyl ortho ester, e.g. ethyl orthoformate in pyridine solution. Unsymmetrical carbocyanine compounds may be prepared by condensing a nitro-substituted 1-methylbenzthiazole (or oxazole or selenazole) quaternary salt with a 1-acetanilidovinyl derivative of benzthiazole (or oxazole or selenazole) which may or may not be nitro-substituted:
