Abstract

543,974. Ropes of cellulose esters or saponified cellulose esters. FINLAYSON, D. June 19,1840, No. 10573. [Class 2 (ii)] Ropes of high tensile strength, flexing life, and wear resistance are made by cabling an assembly of strands made from filaments of cellulose acetate or other cellulose ester which have been stretched while under the influence of a softening agent. The filaments may have been saponified after stretching so as to convert them into continuous filaments of reconstituted cellulose, and they may have been subjected to a shrinking operation after the stretching. The filaments may be employed in the form of continuous filaments or of strands made from staple fibre. Continuous filaments within the heavy strands from which the cabled structure is derived may have but a small twist. In forming the rope the strands may be laid regularly by use of an egg-shaped tool with equi-distant grooves in its polished surface. Sizing and oiling may be effected after applying the closing twist. The ropes may be treated with a preservative, e.g. copper naphthenate. This may be applied in a solvent such as motor spirit together if desired with a lubricant.
