Abstract
543,861. Polyhydric alcohol polycarboxylic acid condensation products. AMERICAN CYANAMID CO. June 4, 1940, No. 9772. Convention date, June 22, 1939. [Classes 2 (ii) and 2 (iii)] Alcoholic compositions containing resinous materials comprise a polyester obtained by reacting together an alpha-beta unsaturated dicarboxyllic acid and a polyhydric alcohol containing at least three ether linkages in the chain separating the OH groups and having not over three OH groups, and a low molecular monohydric alcohol miscible with at least a small proportion of water. Coating compositions which dry relatively slowly. at room temperatures may be obtained by incorporating the polyesters with shellac, nitrocellulose &c. Other resins specified comprise hexaethylene glycol fumarate, the maleic ester of trihydric ether alcohol derived from glycerol and ethylene oxide, the maleic and fumaric esters of other polyethylene glycols and mixtures thereof. An oxidation catalyst, e.g. soluble cobalt salts or peroxide may be incorporated with the resin or the composition may be exposed to ultra-violet light. In examples a hexaethylene glycol maleate resin, prepared by heating maleic acid and hexaethylene glycol, is mixed with shellac and dissolved in ethyl alcohol.
