Abstract

Linear copolyesters are made by heating a mixture of (a) a diaryl ester of terephthalic and/or isophthalic acid (b) a diaryl ester of carbonic acid and (c) a major molar proportion of a dihydric phenol and a minor molar proportion of a dihydric alcohol and under such conditions that the phenol components of the diaryl esters and the excess diaryl ester of carbonic or oxalic acid distils off; the combined mol per cent of esters (a) and (b) being at least to the mol per cent of dihydric compounds (c). Preferably component (h) is used in an amount of 1-10% based on (a). Specified dihydric phenols are resorcinol, hydroquinone and bisphenol A whilst specified dihydric alcohols are ethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, 1:6-hexanediol, neopentylene glycol and 1:4-dimethylolcyclohexane. Uses.-Fibres, films, moulded articles.
