Abstract

A reactive composition comprises (1) diallylidene pentaerythritol, i.e. the compound of formula <FORM:0891206/IV (a)/1> (2) an ester produced by reaction of ingredients including a polyhydric alcohol and a polycarboxylic acid, said ester comprising from 10 to 30% free primary hydroxyl groups and having more than two such hydroxyl groups per molecule and (3) an acid-acting catalyst, components (1) and (2) being present in approximately stoichiometrically equivalent amounts. The esters are prepared from a single polyhydric alcohol possessing at least three primary hydroxyl groups or a mixture of polyhydric alcohols averaging at least about 3 hydroxyl groups per molecule; specified alcohols include ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, 1,4-butanediol, 1,5-pentanediol, glycerol, trimethylol ethane, trimethylol propane, pentaerythritol, dipentaerythritol, mannitol and sorbitol, the dihydric alcohols being only used in mixtures. Specified polycarboxylic acids used to prepare the polyesters are maleic, fumaric, succinic, adipic, phthalic, citric, sebacic and azaleic; the anhydrides of these acids and their esters with alkanols of 1-4 carbon atoms may also be used. Acid-acting catalysts mentioned are sulphuric acid, p-toluenesulphonic acid and diethyl sulphate. In Example 1, a balsamic ester is prepared from maleic anhydride, ethylene glycol and pentaerythritol and mixed with diallylidene pentaerythritol dissolved in isopropanol, water and sulphuric acid to give a homogeneous film-forming composition which was cast on a glass plate and baked to give a hard, tough, mar-resistant and water-insensitive film. In Example 4 the polyester used is bis-(pentaerythritol) sebacate. Coating compositions can be prepared using an alcohol, ester or a ketone as the solvent but aqueous solutions and also suspensions are preferred. The aqueous systems may also be used as impregnating, sizing or bonding compositions. They may also be used in conjunction with other film-formers such as methyl cellulose and gum arabic. The reactive compositions per se may be cast or moulded into solid objects.
