Abstract

543,860. Dyeing textiles &c. AMERICAN CYANAMID CO. Feb. 12, 1940, No. 2692.. Convention date, Feb. 25, 1939. [Classes 2 (ii), 2 (iii) and 15 (ii)] Fibres and fabrics, e.g. of cotton, regenerated cellulose, cellulose acetate, saponified or not, silk, wool, synthetic polyamides, polystyrenes, polyisobutylene or artificial fibres of protein, glass threads, ribbons or fabrics, paper and like materials are coloured by applying thereto, e.g. by printing, a coloured aqueous emulsion of a solution in an organic solvent of a waterinsoluble urea resin, such solution constituting the disperse phase, and the colouring-matter being introduced after the emulsion is formed. The colours incorporated may be water-soluble dyes or water-insoluble organic or inorganic pigments such as phthalocyanine pigments, phosphotungstic or phosphomolybdic lakes of basic dyes or ultramarine. In examples, (1) a solution in excess of the alcohol of a waterinsoluble resin made by refluxing a solution of dimethylolurea in benzyl alcohol is emulsified in an aqueous solution containing casein, triethanolamine, ammonium hydroxide and sodium lauryl or oleyl sulphate, carbon black and copper phthalocyanine are introduced into the emulsion by grinding, the mixture is printed on cotton, a cotton-wool mixture, silk or pigmented viscose rayon and the printed material is heated for 3 minutes at 150‹C; the print is resistant to wet and dry crocking, to light, to soap-boiling and to dry-cleaning solvents ; (2) Nigrosine, spirit soluble, is introduced by grinding into an emulsion prepared as in (1), the mixture is printed on cotton and the printed material is heated as in (1) ; (3) a water-insoluble resin made by refluxing a solution of dimethylolurea in the monoglyceride of castor oil is emulsified as in (1), Vat brown RRD and carbon black are introduced into the emulsion by grinding and the mixture is printed on cotton, silk or pigmented viscose rayon ; (4) a water-insoluble resin made by refluxing a solution of dimethylolurea in octyl alcohol is ,mixed with chlorinated rubber and dibutyl phthalate, the mixture is emulsified as in (1), a pigment, comprising copper phthalocyanine and blanc fixe precipitated together' by dissolving in conc. sulphuric acid and pouring into water, is introduced by grinding, the mixture is printed on cotton and the printed material is heated for 10 minutes at 130‹C., (5) a solution in excess of the alcohol of a water-insoluble resin made by refluxing a solution of dimethylolurea in butyl alcohol is mixed with a solution of ethyl cellulose in pine oil and dibutyl phthalate, the mixture is emulsified as in (1), a pigment, comprising Vat brown RRD, precipitated on barium sulphate by oxidation from a vat, is introduced by grinding, the mixture is printed on cotton, viscose rayon or silk and the printed material is heated as in (1). Specifications 396,618, [Group XV], and 522,941 are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also (a) the use of any coloured aqueous dispersion of a water-insoluble urea resin, (b) the use of coloured complexes formed by reaction of a coloured component with the resin, (c) an additional example in which a water insoluble resin made by refluxing a solution of dimethylolurea in octyl alcohol is ground with the pigment, 4-nitro-2-aminotoluene (2 mols.) <SP>#</SP># the benzidide of acetoacetic acid (1 mol.), the mixture is emulsified in an aqueous solution of ammonium salts of linseed oil fatty acids and the emulsion is printed on textile fabrics. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
