Abstract

542,917. Trueing grinding-wheels. GEAR GRINDING CO., Ltd., and BULLOWS, R. J. Feb. 22, 1941, No. 2427. [Class 60] A wheel a, Fig. 6, for grinding gear wheels, screw threads, spline shafts &c. is trimmed by a diamond g, Fig. 1, carried at one end of a shaft f, the other end r of which co-operates with a templet q, the shaft being supported so that it can oscillate about its axis and in two planes at right angles to each other, moved by driving and driven cranks t, s connected by a rod x, and controlled so that the diamond traverses the desired path determined in part by the templet. The movement of the upper end of the rod x is controlled by a spring z and by slotted links 8 connected to slides 5 pressed outwardly against stops 7, Fig. 2, by a spring 2. The part e of the shaft f is offset so that the diamond is spaced from the shaft axis by a distance equal to the radius of the curve a of the rounded edge d, Fig. 6. The shaft is mounted in a sleeve h universally jointed at j, k, m to the frame n. When the device is in the position shown the diamond is in the centre of the face c of the wheel a and on rotating a worm v by hand or automatically the crank t moves the rod x so that the shaft f swings about the bearing m and the diamond moves towards the edge d until the roller r engages one of two templets q. Continued movement of the crank t causes the shaft to rotate about its axis and the diamond to traverse the curve d until arrested by one of two stops 10 carried by a floating bearing 9 which is prevented from rotating by a yoke 12, to which the spring z is connected, and a lever 14, hinged at 15 to the frame n. Then the roller r traverses the templet and the diamond the curve b until the crank t is arrested by a stop 17. The movement of the crank is then reversed and continued so that the diamond traverses the other corner d and curve b. The sleeve h may be pressed up by a spring p and this movement be limited by a stop 16 which engages the lever 14. The-frame n may be arranged on a slide to be movable to and from the wheel a.
