Abstract
542,747. Strut connections. MARTIN, J., and MARTIN-BAKER AIRCRAFT CO., Ltd. Feb. 11, 1941, No. 1826. [Class 20 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIII] A joint, particularly for securing a detachable aero engine to a fuselage frame comprises a split sleeve or bush fitted into the members to be joined, a tapered expander fitted in the split sleeve and a bolt for displacing the expander axially. Fig. 2 shows a section of a joint comprising two parallel plates 8, 9 between which the ends of some of the frame members 5 and stays 6 are received and secured by bolts 11. The end 12 of a detachable engine mounting strut also is received between the plates and secured in position by a split sleeve 16 which is expanded into tight contact with holes in the plates 8, 9 and member 12, by a tapered expander 15 forced into position by a bolt 13 screwed into a boss on the plate 8. This boss has a socket 10 to receive one of the frame members 5. Each sleeve expander and bolt of a set is fixed or removed from the same side of the assemblage. The members 15, 16 have threaded parts 15a, 16a at their outer ends to enable them to be withdrawn by nuts screwed over their ends. The engine mounting struts, with attached bulkhead 7, Fig. 3, can therefore be readily removed without disturbing the fuselage frame. The lower pair of plates are connected by a hollow bolt 4a to receive a landing carriage strut connection.
