[Class 108 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXI] Each driving road wheel is provided with an independent drive unit which comprises an electric motor and is independently supported by means of a torsion bar spring. In the construction shown in Fig. 1 the drive unit comprises a motor 1, a gear case 2 and the road wheel 3 and is connected to the chassis frame 13 by a torsion bar 8 fixed at one end 11 to the motor and at the other end 15 to the frame. The motor is formed with brackets 4 having bearings 9 for a fixed sleeve 7 supported on the frame at 14, 16, the end 14.being square to fit in a square hole in a frame bracket 12. One end of the torsion bar 8 is splined at 11 to fit an extension 10 of one of the motor brackets 4 and the other end is splined at 15 to the tube 7. by removing the bolts 18 securing bracket 16 to the frame the whole drive unit can be removed.. The wheel 3 may be a steering wheel having a steering pivot 5. In the construction shown in Fig. 2 the motor 19 drives the road wheel 21 through worm gearing 22, 23, and the unit is connected to the frame by a torsion bar 20. The motor of two co-axial road wheels may also be co-axial, or in the case of narrow vehicles one motor and its torsion bar pivot may be in front of the road wheel axis and the other to the rear of the axis.
