Abstract
541,347. Electrolytic surface oxidation of nickel or its alloys. JAHN, A. R., JAHN, C., and LANCASTER, H. F. June 6, 1940, No. 9908. [Class 41] An endless screen or grid 1 formed of thin wires of nickel or nickelpalladium alloy is passed about a driven roll 2 teeth 3 of which engage links in the grid whereby the grid, the wires of which are preferably roughened by sandblast or by chemical treatment to facilitate oxidation, travels slowly through the electrolyte 7 e.g. a weak solution of potassium bicarbonate with which may be mixed a little potassium iodide. The lower part of the grid passes about a roll 6 of the same material, or about a loosely mounted roller adjacent to which is the cathode 8 of perforated nickel, a muslin sheet 9 aiding in directing the ions. After oxidation the grid may be cut and used as a catalyst for hydrogenation of liquids as described in Specification 541,570, [Group III].
