541,286. Filling-machines. SMITH, A. R. Sept. 23, 1940, No. 14481. [Class 94 (i)] A machine for filling receptacles with powdered material comprises a vertical rotatable shaft having a worm at its lower end, a closed hopper surrounding the spindle, means for making an air-tight joint around the aperture through which the spindle passes, and a vertically-adjustable support for the hopper. The hopper comprises a glass or other cylinder j, a cover m, and a funnel k at the lower end of the cylinder. The spindle c passes through a boss n on the cover m and is surrounded by a sealing washer o, of rubber or other suitable material, which is housed in a recess in the boss and is pressed against the base p of a gear casing i. A filling aperture in the cover is closed by a plug r, and another opening s is provided to permit the admission of gas to the hopper when required. The cylinder j is supported by an horizontal plate t which is adjustably secured to the framework by screwed stems z. The funnel k is held in position by a pair of handlevers x pivoted on the underside of the plate t. A worm w on the spindle is located in the discharge orifice of the funnel, and a stirrer 4 may be mounted on the spindle. The cylinder j is held securely in position, and the required tight joint around the spindle is obtained, by means of the screwed stems z. The parts of the device are readily detachable for cleaning.
