Abstract

541,191. Rectifying alternating currents. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd., and WHITEHEAD, C. C. Aug. 8, 1940, No. 12753. [Class 38 (ii)] In a mercury arc rectifier regulated by phase shift of positive voltage impulses applied to control grids, the regulation is effected by variable saturation of an inductance in accordance with output voltage. The rectifier V, fed through a transformer T, has its grid energized through a transformer T 3 the primary circuit of which includes a valve V 2 which is periodically blocked so as to interrupt current in the primary circuit and thus apply impulses to the grid of the rectifier V 1 by a grid circuit which includes a rectifier Z, and transformer T 4 . The primary of the latter includes phase-displacing elements comprising a condenser C, and inductance L 4 . The latter is variably saturated under the control of a valve V 3 , the conductivity of which is varied in accordance with the output voltage of the rectifier V 1 by a connection between its cathode and the point of interconnection between a pair of resistances R 1 , R: across the load circuit terminals.
