Abstract

541,122. Testing hardness of materials. CRADICK, M. J., DUNTON, A. R., and METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. June 11, 1940, No. 10174. [Class 106 (ii)] Comprises a scratch test in which the specimen is reciprocated in the same track under a loaded stylus and the extent of movement of the stylus after a time or the time to make a predetermined movement being taken as a measure of the hardness. The specimen 3 is clamped between upper and lower plates constituting a table 3 supported by pillars 10 from a plate 9 oscillated about a vertical axis by pin and slot 7, 8 from a gravity returned slide 6 reciprocated by a cam 5 driven by a motor 4. A stylus 11 carried by an arm 12 having pan 13 for loading weights and and pivoted about an horizontal axis 14 and pillar 15 extends downward to engage the specimen 3 through an arcuate slot 19 in the upper clamping plate. The pillar has secured to it a radial arm 16 along which a clamp 17 can be adjusted the clamp being attached to a spring 18 anchored to a fixed point. As the specimen is oscillated under the stylus the friction increases and the pillar 15 is increasingly deflected about its axis against the influence of the spring 18. When the deflection, reaches a predetermined amount, the arm 12 engages a stop 20 and trips a switch to stop the motor. The time taken to reach this deflection is a measure of hardness.
