Abstract

540,603. Condenser and evaporater in structural combinations. POTTS, H. E. (Distillation Products, Inc.). April 5, 1940, No. 6142. [Class 32] [Also dn Groups XXVI and XXVIII] In processes for high vacuum short path distillation the working fluid of the ejector con densation pump producing the vacuum is vaporised by radiation from the heated surface vaporising the distilland and by the latent heat of condensation of the distillate. The still comprises a closed vessel 4, 6 provided with a water jacketed annular chamber 46 for condensing the working fluid and a passage 72 leading to the fore vacuum pump. Three concentric rotating plates comprise respectively a heated plate 18 having a central depression 20 to which the distilland is fed by a branched pipe 26, 60 from a stationary pipe 56; a central plate 24 on the lower surface of which the distillate is condensed while on the upper surface the working fluid, fed through a pipe 48 and cup shaped extension 22, is evaporated; and an upper plate 30 between which and the plate 24 an annular ejection nozzle is formed owing to the centrifugal force so that the vaporised fluid and residual gases in the chamber are ejected into the chamber 46. Annular receivers and draw-offs 62, 66, 64, 68 are provided for the residual distilland and the condensate respectively. In Fig. 2 the plates are stationary, the working fluid is pumped by a pump 110 through line 48 to the top of the central plate 108 while the distilland flows by gravity over the plate 100. Working fluids specified are'diethyl, dipropyl dibutyl, diamyl and dioctyl phthalate, dioctyl sebacate, methyl and ethyl esters of oleic, stearic, and mixed fatty acids.
