Abstract

540,305. Valves. CROWN CORK & SEAL CO., Inc. April 10, 1940, No. 6512. Convention date, June 29, 1939. [Class 135] [Also in Group XVII] A machine for filling milk bottles &c. has a reservoir 10, Fig. 1 rotatable on a base, a liquid inlet pipe 36, extending into and rotating with the reservoir and a horizontally extending floatoperated sleeve valve 61 mounted on the lower end of the inlet pipe and rotating with it. The domed base 14 of the tank 10 carries a skirt 15 which bears on the flange 16 of a rotary shaft 17. The use of seams or joints in the base 14 is avoided. The filling system maintains sub-atmospheric pressure above the surface of the milk in the tank 10. Air is drawn through venting tubes 19 and dripping of milk from the filling valves 18 is thereby prevented. Each tube 19 has ribs 20, Fig. 2, shouldered at 21 which support the tube 19 in a shell 22 depending from the valve aperture 24. A resilient valve or sealing ring 25 secured to the lower end of each shell 22 co-operates with a sealing surface 26 on each tube 19 to form a seal which will be broken when the mouth of the bottle to be filled forces the lower portion of the ring 25 away from the surface 26. Milk is delivered to the tank 10 through stationary pipes 30, 32. Pipe 32 has a sliding fit in the pipe 36 which rotates with the tank and is supported in a boss 37 fixed to the cover 39 of the tank. A removable gland nut 40 maintains a sealed joint. The side walls of the boss 37 are apertured at 41 to connect with a vacuum pump. The apertures open into a chamber 43 which has a ground or seat fit upon the upper side surfaces of the boss 37 so that the boss 37 may rotate while the chamber remains stationary. There is an air-tight seal 50 between the tank 10 and the cover 39, which has one or more hand holes 52 normally closed by cbver plates 53. The vent tubes 19 may be taken out through the holes 52 if necessary. The flow of milk through the pipe 36 into the tank is regulated by a float valve 55 mounted on a casing 56 with a horizontal bore 57. The casing extends laterally of pipe 36 and the extended portion has a series of slots 60. A slotted valve sleeve 61 rotatable under the influence of a float is seated on the extended portion. The ends of the horizontal bore of the casing 56 are closed by plates 70, 71, held in place by a resilient clamp 73. When the clamp 73 is removed, the parts of the float valve may be taken.apart for cleaning.
