Abstract

540,085. Automatic control systems for refrigerating apparatus ; electric motor control ; switches. UNITED FRUIT CO. Jan. 29, 1940, No. 1800. Convention date, Nov. 24, 1939. [Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXVII] Temperature; fluid pressure.-A valve controlling the supply of refrigerant is automatically controlled to maintain a predetermined degree of superheat at a point in a refrigerating system. A member 94 responsive to pressure in the suction heater 6 of the evaporator 4, for example, is coupled to a member 102 carrying contacts 108, 112 in alternative control circuits for a reversible motor actuating an expansion valve 16 in the conduit supplying the evaporator. A member 104 responsive to the temperature at the same or some other suitable point in the system carries contacts engaging respectively with either of the contacts 108, 112 to energize the motor when the degree of superheat, determined by the distance between the contacts, is departed from. Manual means to adjust the valve is provided by a switch 70 and the motor speed may be varied by a resistance 66. The needle-type valve is actuated by a slow pitch screw and the motor is geared to turn the valve stem at the rate of about two revolutions per hour ; over regulation is thereby prevented. Limit switches 80, 82 are actuated by projections on the back and front respectively of a gear wheel fixed on the valve stem. The valve actuating motor may be electric, pneumatic, hydraulic or mechanical.
