Abstract

539,429. Casting sheets of film-forming materials. ROONEY, J. H., HAWTIN, P. R., and MACPHERSON, D. C. March 6, 1940, No. 4187. [Class 2 (ii)] Sheets at least one-hundredth of an inch thick are built up on a support travelling through a heated evaporative atmosphere, by the successive deposition of layers of a solution of a film-forming substance in a volatile solvent. A substantial part of the solvent initially present in each layer is removed by evaporation before the deposition of the next layer, and the bulk of the solvent is removed after the built-up sheet has been stripped from the support. The travelling support is preferably a continuous band of nickel or stainless steel having a highly polished surface. The solution may be a 20 per cent-35 per cent solution of cellulose acetate in acetone containing the desired content of plasticizer, and it may be made up with an excess of acetone which is boiled off under reduced pressure immediately before the solution is used. The temperature of the evaporative atmosphere and the speed of the band are reduced as the thickness of the built-up sheet increases. Specifications 396,723 and 538,024 are referred to.
