Abstract
538,645. Reforming gasoline. STEVENS, A. H. (Phillips Petroleum Co.). Dec. 20, 1939, No. 32597. [Class 2 (iii)] [Also in Group III] The anti-knock characteristics of gasolines are improved by passing them in vapour form, at a pressure between atmospheric and 100 lb. per sq. inch over a bauxite catalyst impregnated with a chromium compound subsequently converted to the oxide, at a temperature between 800-1100‹F, and a flow rate between 1 and 10 liquid volumes of gasoline stock per volume of catalyst per hour, splitting the treated vapours into two streams, recycling one of the streams without substantial cooling back into the heated raw vapours prior to the catalyst chamber and separating from the other stream of treated vapours the decomposed impurities and the light gas fraction containing a substantial proportion of hydrogen from the hydrocarbons boiling within the gasoline range. The process effects the removal of sulphur compounds and other impurities and increases the octane number. Examples are given.
