Abstract
538,349. Actuation of switches; gas-blast switches. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., BLANDFORD, A. R., and ROWLAND, F. G. May 13, 1940, No. 8591. [Class 38 (v)] When the movable contact 2 of a gas-blast switch is separated from a fixed nozzle contact 1 against the action of spring 14, by fluid pressure acting on a piston 4, a port 5a in an adjacent cylinder is opened to admit the pressure beneath a piston 8 which rises and rotates an isolating blade 10 about its pivot 11 into the open position in which it is held by spring clips 19 engaging the crosshead 8b. Contact 2 is also held by a latch 15 which is pivoted at 16 and takes over the piston 4. The latch has a tail 17 pivoted to it at 15a and is deflected, against the action of spring 18 by the projection 10a from blade 10 in the latter's opening movement. The blade is moved to closed position by fluid admitted above piston 8, the piston 4 having a cut-away port 4b to open the space beneath it to atmosphere. The projection 10a engages the tail 17 and moves the latch 15, so allowing spring 14 to close the breaker before the blade closes. Specification 514,804 is referred to.
