538,338. Artificial filaments; films &c. BERGH, J. VAN DER., MILO, G. J., and DIJK, H. E. P. VAN. Feb. 7, 1939, No. 4039. Convention date, Feb. 7, 1938. [Class 2 (ii)] Filaments, films; or the like are obtained from solutions of keratinous materials containing an addition of an aldehyde, urea, or a thiocyanate which substances are capable of forming condensation products with the keratin, or an addition of a substance capable of forming a resinous polymerization product, or two or more substances capable of forming a resinous condensation product with each other. If desired, one of the synthetic resin components may be added to the spinning solution and the other may be added to the bath. The spinning solutions may be obtained by dissolving keratinous materials in alkali sulphide solutions, caustic alkali solutions, or ammoniacal copper oxide solutions. Urea or phenol together with formaldehyde or other aldehyde may be used as synthetic resin components. Vinyl compounds may be used as substances capable of forming resinous polymerization products. In an example, formalin is added to a solution of ground hooves in sodium sulphide and the solution is spun into a solution of sulphuric acid and sodium and ammonium sulphates. In another example, allyl alcohol is added to the keratinous solution. The keratin solutions may be mixed with cellulosic solutions, e.g. viscose or cuprammonium cellulose solutions. The filaments obtained may be hardened by treatment with formaldehyde, or alum. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also a process wherein the aldehyde or other additional substance is added not to the spinning solution but to the spinning bath. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
