Abstract

538,312. Moulding soap ; cylinder machines. LEVER BROS. & UNILEVER, Ltd., BAKER PERKINS, Ltd., CRAIG, R., and HARBER, L. S. Jan. 26, 1940, No. 1663. [Class 87 (ii)] In moulding soap tablets in apparatus of the kind in which a plurality of moulds are mounted radially on the perimeter of a rotating drum and are provided with camoperated bottom plungers for ejecting the moulded tablets, the soap while in the moulds is cooled only sufficiently to form a thin shell of solidified soap strong enough to permit ejection of the tablets which after ejection are completely solidified by cooling in air. Moulds 3 arranged round the periphery of a drum 1 rotated on trunnions by gearing 9 are filled with molten soap from a pivoted nozzle 4. The moulds are covered after filling by an endless stainlesssteel band 5 rotated to move with the moulds by engagement with the surface of the drum and supported on pulleys 11, 30. Radial ejecting plungers 13 pressed upwardly by springs 14 are held level with the top of the moulds until they approach the filling nozzle by a cam 16 which, at the filling position, is given an inclined surface 18 so that the plungers are gradually depressed by the soap until the moulds are filled, whereupon the plungers first contact an adjustable stop 19 and then engage by transverse pins 21 a flange 22 which holds down the plunger until the top of the moulds are fully covered by the band 5. The drum is then rotated through a brine cooling bath whereupon the steel band 5 is removed by the pulley 30 and the moulded tablets are ejected by a cam bar 32 engaging the plunger. The tablets are then transferred into pockets in a transfer wheel 6 from which the tablets are in turn transferred by a pusher rod 35 to a vertical conveyer 8 provided with rubber covered supporting pins 36, 37.
