Abstract
537,771. Centrifugal separators. ALEXANDER, W. Oct. 4, 1940, No. 14869. [Class 23] A stationary centrifugal separator for extracting comparatively dense particles or grit from a liquid in free vortical motion has a cylindrical chamber 2 with a tangential entry 3, Fig. 1, at one end, while at the other end is arranged an outlet 4 for liquid, of less radius than that at which the inflow to the vortex occurs. The separated particles drop to the hopper 8 through the annular space 14 between the chamber wall 1 and the outlet 4. A flange 6 may be placed at the end of the outlet 4 to prevent any axial flow along the outside of the pipe. Instead of opening directly into the vortex chamber the tangential inlet may open into an admission chamber in communication by an annular passage with the vortex chamber. In a modification, the liquid enters axially 'by a varied annular passage. In the modification shown in Fig. 4 the liquid flows upwards from the varied annular passage 3 to the outlet 4 and the separated particles pass through slots 13 in the wall of the chamber to the channel 11 and the receptacle 8. In a further modification shown in Fig. 5, a core 5 is placed in the liquid outlet 4 to make it annular, and some separated particles pass through the slots 13 and channel 11 while others pass through the annular passage 14 to the receptacle 8.
