[Class 106 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXII] A device for damping oscillatory movements of instruments comprises a flat circular sealed container 8 pivotally mounted at or near its axis. A liquid or a powder 10, e.g. powdered tungsten, occupies the lower part of the container, and when the latter oscillates, exercises a braking effect thereon in each direction, without biassing tendency. The container may be mounted on a shaft 5 inclined to its axis, as shown in Fig. 4, or may have an inner ring partition to form an annulus for containing the liquid &c. 10. The rim 9 may be flat or part spherical. The container may be mounted on the spindle of the instrument pointer, or be geared up or down thereto, or may be linked to a reciprocating or rotary member the motion of which is to be braked.
