Abstract

537,619. Spring suspensions. NORTH, O. D., HUGH, P. G., and SCAMMELL LORRIES, Ltd. Jan. 3, 1940, No. 192. [Class 108 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXI] A heavy endless-track or wheeled motor vehicle or tractor is mounted on two or more bogies or axles, at least one of which is dirigible about its connection with the vehicle frame, and at least one bogie or axle being provided with a torque member, stabilising means for the frame being connected to a torque member or members. In the construction shown the vehicle frame 5 is supported by ball joints 6 on two axle housings 4 each mounted on four road wheels by means of two balance beams la, 2a as described in Specifications 266,272, [Class 79 (ii)], and 386,671 [Group XXXI]. Thus the frame can pivot about a longitudinal axis passing through the two joints 6, but is stabilized by means of connecting torque rods 10 to the frame as described in Specification 537,620, [Group XXXI]. Each axle 4 can swivel about the ball joint 6 for steering and is steered by screw- and-nut gearing 8 mounted on the-torque rods 10 and connected to the axle by arms 20 as described in Specification 537,621, [Group XXXI]. A spring connection is provided between the frame 5 and the ball joint 6. This may comprise a transverse spring 7, Figs. 1, 2 and 4 bolted at its centre to a plate 7b forming part of the ball joint and shackled at its end to a cross member 5d of the frame, or longitudinal springs 7f may be provided as shown in Fig. 5, the springs being shackled at their ends to the frame 5 and secured at their centres by shoes 7e to a transverse beam 7d carrying part of the ball joint. Each ball joint 6 is located between the transverse planes passing through the axis of the corresponding axle and the centre of the joint 19. More than two bogies or axles may be provided, any or all may be steerable, and all or only some of the road wheels may be driving wheels.
