Abstract

537,548. Moulding concrete slabs. STRONG W. E. S. Dec. 29, 1939, No. 33059. [Class 87 (ii)] Concrete or like material is moulded by subjecting the material in an open mould box to the pressure of a descending forming element which is arrested after travelling a pre-determined distance and simultaneously vibrating the material, a quantity of which is allowed to escape from the mould during pressing. An open mould box 10 is vibrated by cams 18 acting on wheels 21 attached to a supporting frame 12 supported by co-operating buffer blocks 13, 16. A forming cover 30 is provided with a cover plate 32 to provide air-tight chambers 30a, 30b and is supported by a floating frame 34 mounted on a travelling carriage 36. The cover 30 is lowered by the admission through piping 43 of compressed air to a cylinder 40 to effect movement of a piston 42. Surplus material escapes from the mould through holes 46 in the cover 30. The vacuum seal produced between the cover and the surface of the moulded material is broken by admission of compressed air between those surfaces from a cylinder 48 through orifices 47 which are opened and shut by rack and pinion mechanism controlled by the movement of piston 51 in the cylinder 48. Alternatively a spring- controlled poppet valve may be used which is opened directly by the compressed air.
