Abstract
536,453. Valve generating circuits. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., SHANNON, D. S. B., and CHATTERJEA, P. K. Nov. 14, 1939, No. 30036. [Class 40 (v)] In a time base circuit, the linearity of the output is improved by varying the potential of the earthy condenser plate with respect to earth, this potential falling at a decreasing rate as the potential of the other plate rises during the charging period. The relaxation condenser C1 is in series with an auxiliary condenser C2, these being connected as shown to the screen grid SG, control grid CG, and secondary emitter SE of a valve V1, having a screen S to block the direct path between the cathode C and the secondary emitter. In operation, as the condenser Cl charges over resistance R1, the potential on the screen-grid SG rises ; at a certain point secondary emission from SE commences and increases rapidly when SG attains a critical potential. SE rapidly becomes positive, so that a positive potential is applied over C2 to the control grid CG, whose potential rises rapidly. The process is cumulative and primary and secondary currents increase, until the increase in the primary current lowers the potential of the screen-grid SG to a point at which condenser C1 discharges, the voltage across C1 being reversed since SE is at this instant positive. As SG falls below the critical value, emission from SE suddenly ceases, causing its potential to fall. This potential change is applied over C2 to the control grid CG, causing it to become negative and stop the primary current through the valve, thereby allowing C1 to recharge over R1. The cycle then repeats. Fig. 2A shows the sawtooth voltage produced at the screen grid with respect to ground ; Fig. 2B shows the " square " voltage wave at the secondary emitter SE, this voltage being suitable for feeding an inductive load such as deflecting coils ; Fig. 2C shows the voltage at the cathode C, and Fig. 2D that at the control grid. The voltage at SE is added to the exponential voltage across C1 and thus produces the more linear voltage shown in Fig. 2A. The wave form shown in Fig. 2A may be taken off at terminals X and that of Fig. 2B at terminals Y. Specification 534,576 is referred to.
