Abstract

536,376. Finishing shoe bottoms. B. B. CHEMICAL CO., Ltd., and PUDDEFOOT, L. E. Nov. 10, 1939, No. 29787. [Class 95] A finishing operation is performed on the bottom of a shoe outsole, by rapidly applying (e.g. by spraying) bottom finish to the bottom of the outsole, whilst the edge surface of the outsole is protected against the application of bottom finish thereto. The edge surface may, for instance, be first treated with a coating composition, e.g. a rubber latex composition, which enables any bottom finish deposited on the edge to be readily removed subsequently. After the coating composition has been applied to the edge surface, the bottom of the outsole may be scoured to provide a smooth even surface for the reception of the bottom finish, and to remove any coating composition which may inadvertently have been applied to the bottom. Bottom finish may then be rapidly applied to the bottom, the surface brushed, mopped or padded, and the protective coating removed from the edge surface. Alternatively, the edge of the outsole and the adjacent portion of the shoe upper may be mechanically masked while the bottom finish is applied. A suitable masking device comprises a frame 21 consisting of two channel-shaped members 23, pivoted together at 25, and receiving an inflatable tubular rubber shoe-engaging member 31. When the shoe has been inserted, sole uppermost, the treadle-operated lever 51 is depressed, thus swinging inwardly the bars 15 and pressing the shoe-engaging member 31 firmly against the periphery of the shoe bottom.
