Abstract

536,257. Gaseous density. ROBINSON, T. W. S. Nov. 1, 1939, No. 29112. [Class 97 (iii)] To measure the density of a gas or gas mixture the gas and a comparison gas are caused to flow simultaneously through a pair of orifices at predetermined rates and thereby set up a differential condition which can be measured. Fig. 1 shows a container a, b, c, d having orifices g, h and an inner bell i vertically movable therein. A liquid seal is introduced through an aperture an overflow n being provided to limit the quantity of liquid and a drain duct x is also provided. The gas mixture to be tested is introduced into the lower chamber through duct k at a rate greater than it escapes through orifice h causing the bell i to rise to a pre-determined height as shown by an indicator p through a window q. The gas mixture is then shut off and the bell i falls by gravity causing the comparison gas, i.e. air, to flow into the upper chamber through the orifice g thereby setting up a differential pressure at the inner and outer parts of the orifice g which may be measured by means of a duct z leading to a pressure meter. A modification is described in the Specification.
