Abstract
536,095. Tanks. MAGNESIUM ELEKTRON, Ltd., and WINTER, D. B. Sept. 29, 1939, No. 26865. [Class 69 (i)] A tank, such as a fuel tank for aircraft, has spaced stiffening ribs, and curved baffles arranged obliquely to the ribs and attached to two or more thereof, there being one or more sets of baffles each comprising two baffles with adjacent edges and opposite edges spaced apart, and another baffle with one edge between said spaced edges and extending away from the two baffles to form one or more sinuous passages. The baffles may be stiffened as by corrugations or flanges. The tank comprises panels 7 welded at 9 to T-shaped ribs 8 and end caps 12, 13, welded at parts 14, 15, spaced from the nearest ribs 8. Baffles 21, 22 are welded to one rib 8 with their edges adjacent, the opposite edges being spaced and welded to the next rib 8 ; a further baffle 23 extends from the latter rib 8 to the next rib. A similar set of baffles 24, 25, 26, is reversely arranged as shown. Further baffles 27, 28, 32, 33, are also provided. The edges of the baffles adjacent the tank shell are spaced therefrom. A gusset plate 38, Fig. 3, is riveted to the ribs 8, and angle strips 37 are riveted to the baffles and bolted to the ribs 8 and gusset plates.
