[Class 141] [Also in Group VIII and IX] A garter band 15 attached to a stocking top comprises a two-way stretch fabric produced by braiding, knitting or weaving and in which each of a number of elastic warp elements m, p interengages with two other elastic warps one at a time and at different points along the fabric. The welt 14 and upper part of the stocking may be formed separately from the leg 10 and other parts, and the two-way stretch band can be sewn to the two parts ; alternatively, the stocking can be knitted in one piece, and before sewing the stocking top the edges of 'the band can be sewn in place. In another form, the elastic band can be topped on to the needles of a knitting-machine for forming the leg and subsequently sewing a top and welt on to the other edge of the band. To form straight inelastic portions in the band for sewing to the stocking top, some of the elastic warps h, l engage only with inelastic warps, so that strips of inelastic fabric separate these elastic warps. A strip having one-way stretch only may be attached to the band by sewing. The two-way stretch and one-way stretch parts may, alternatively, be joined by an openwork structure 43d, e.g. by a fagot stitch, to allow movement of one edge relatively to the edge to which it is attached.
