Description

Patented Dec. 28, 1937 o j HosnaarV4 l o i f William J. Longtin, Reading, Pa., assignor to'In.-
"UNITED STATES fantvSocks Company, tion ofr Delaware Reading, Pa., a corporavApplication July 19, 1934, Serial No. 736,087- y 7 Claims.
yThis invention relates to tubular rib fabric for hosiery tops or for other uses and more particularly to fabric having designs formed by wrap f threads individual to the outside rib wales. f
It is an object'of this invention to provide anelastic garter section or sections in the wrap design tubular rib top for holding the same on the i leg of the wearer, which 'garter section'or vsections comprises a plurality of continuous or non 1()` continuous courses of elastic rubber thread inlaid in the courses between the outsideand inside rib wales.
It is a further object of this invention to securely anchor the ends ofthe inlaid rubberv yarn to the rib fabric so as` to prevent creeping ofthe rubber yarn along `the courses when the rib fabric is stretched in use. i
A-pr'eferred embodiment" will be described in connection with the accompanying drawing from which the advantages and objects of the invention will 'be obvious.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a section in enlarged detail of a tubular rib wrap design top having an inlaid rubber yarn garter, y
Fig. 2 is a view of Aa stocking or anklet showing the general location of ythe gasters, the rib top being unfolded, and n Fig. 3 is a similar view with the top folded to normal wearing position.
In the manufacture of tubular rib wrap tops of thetype shown, by way of example, in Larkin Patent 1,772,400 and made upon the Larkin machine Patent 1,841,249, a wrap design thread and a finger for the same is provided for each cylinder needle, the design depending upon the -wrapping or the non-wrapping of the designh thread by the finger yaround the associated needle. In providing an inlay rubber thread, which may be ct the type known commercially as Lastex, to
act as a garter in the completed article, there rnust be no interference between the design threads and the rubber yarn in the article and no interference between the operation of the fingers and the rubber yarn inlay mechanism in\ the machine.
The mechanism whereby the vcombination of rib wrap tops or fabric and rubber yarn garter inlay be made is shown in application Serial Number 736,088 filed July 19, 1934.
- The wrap design rubber yarn garter inlay tubular rib tops may be used on infants socks or hosiery or upon full length socks or hosiery. It may be used at any place where tubular rib fabric may have a function such askin sweaters, etc.
In Fig. 2 an infants sock is `shown having the plain foot I and the rib top 2 joined to the foot I at 3 in the usual manner. At 4, 5, and Bare shown rubber yarn inlays of a number of courses, here shown as three, which depending upon the 5 strength of the garter desired, may be any suit-` able numberv of one or more courses. Thegarter inlays may bev placed wherever desired, that is' only at 5 and/or 6 without 4 or only at 4 without 5 and 6. The rib top 2 is of the lklld- 10 ing over type, folding on the 'line 1 toprovide the top as shown inFig. Shaving the wrap design indicated at 8 on the outer face. The folded over top conceals the inlays! and 6, `and while the inlay 4 is shown diagrammatically in Fig.'3,w15 as beingas prominent as inlays 5 and 6,k actually the wrap design threads aidin concealing the` inlay fromview. Theinlays 5-and-V 6 lare not themselves prominent due to the coverage by the outside wales and the design threads makes the 2o inlay 4 even less prominent.
In the straight .or unfolded type of rib top, the wrap design will appear as usual on the outside face and the inlays may be either below or above or at the design. 25
In Fig. 1 is shown a diagrammatic detail ofthe rib top having outside rib wales 9, I0, II, and I2 and inside rib wales I3, I4, I5, and I6 of body yarn I1. The body yarn may be changed for horizontal striping as in said 1,772,400. The wrap design threads are shown in wales 9, II, and I2 vat 23, 24, and 25. At certain courses the wrap threads are plated on the body stitches, as for example in course I8 at wale Il,k and in other courses the wrap threads are floated 3 5 in back of the body stitches, as for example in course I9 at walc 9. This is well known as disclosed in said Larkin patent.
The rubber yarn inlay is shown at 26 extending horizontally between the outside and inside 40 rib wales and being substantially hidden thereby. The beginning end' portion of the rubber yarn is securely anchored by means of interknitting as single or unplated stitches 21 and 28 with the adjacent outside body yarn stitches of` 45 courses I8 and I9 in wales I0 and II. Likewise the end portion of the rubber yarn is anchored by stitches 29 and 30 between the courses 2I and 22 of the body yarn'in the wales I0 and II. It 50 Y is obvious that the rubber yarn stitches may be in more than two wales if desired, to give additional security in anchoring the ends. It is also' obvious that the end portions of the rubber yarn ymay be anchored in other ways, Afor example the 55 Larkin' Patent 30 wrap thread and the outside rib wales.
In Fig. 1 is shown the relation of the rubber inlay to the rib stitches and to the wrap thread stitches in a. design portion of the rib top such as at I. At both signs are absent, the relation of the rubber inlay to the rib stitches is in Fig. 1, and with oi' the wrap threads, is in all other respects identical therewith.
I claim:
1. A tubular stocking having a rib top comprising outside and inside rib wales and a rubstitches.
2. A tubular stocking having a rib top' comprising outside and inside rib wales and a rubber yarn garter inlay extending between the rib wales for one or more courses, an end portion of the rubber yarnbeing interknitted by means oi single yarn stitches with the body stitches of a plurality of the outside rib wales.
3. A tubular stocking having a rib top com- 4. A tubular stocking having a rib top comprising outside and inside rib wales and a rubof single yarn stitches with the body stitches in single courses of a plurality ofthe outside rib Wales.
5. A tubular rib top comprising outside and inside rib wales and a rubber yarn garter inlay extending between the rib wales for one or more courses, an end portion of the rubber yarn being interknitted by means of one or more single yarn stitches with the body stitches.
