Abstract

535,239. Gearing for starting and stopping machinery. FAIRWEATHER, W. C. (Singer Manufacturing Co.). Nov. 22, 1939, No. 30578. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIV] In a combined clutch and brake mechanism for sewing and like machines, the brakeholder is pivoted in a ring which is hinged on anon-diametrical axis to a housing and is provided with adjusting- means. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 1, a motor 24, 11, arranged Between end caps 13, 14, drives a shaft 23 provided with a fly-wheel 25 having a friction-ring 29 for co-operation with a clutchdisc 36 on a hub 35 provided with a pulley 40. The clutchdisc can co-operate also with a brake consisting of a friction-ring 41 on a holder 45 mounted stiffly on trunnions 46 in a ring 50 which is mounted on a hinge-pin 52 on the end plate 14 and is held by a spring 59 in engagement with the head of an adjusting-screw 56. The hub 35 is movable axially by means of a rod 61 which is connected by a ball-bearing 62 to a sleeve 63 having a multiple thread 67 co-operating with a boss 66 on the end plate 13. The sleeve 63 is provided with an arm which is held in raised position by a spring 76 and is depressible, through a resilient connection, by a pedal. On depression of the pedal, the screw 67 causes the rod 61 to move longitudinally, the clutchdisc is moved into engagement with the frictionring 29, and the pulley 40 is driven. On release of the pedal, the members are returned by the spring 76, and the clutch-disc is automatically moved into engagement with the brake-ring 41. The rings 29, 41 are cemented to metal rings 28, 42 which have lugs 27, 43 engaging recesses in the fly-wheel 25 and the holder 45. The ring 28 is secured with slight lateral freedom by a split ring 30, and the ring 42 is secured by rivets. For smoothing the action of the clutch-disc, the rings 28, 42 which are resilient are formed with a wavy surface. The apparatus may be adjustbly mounted below a sewing-machine table. A guard 80 for the pulley 40 is pivoted on the end cap 14 and retained by a spring-pin. A beltguard is adjustably secured. by screws passing through a slot, to the guard 80.
