535,187. Adiponitrile. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. Sept. 29, 1939, No. 26885. Convention date, Sept. 30, 1938. [Class 2 (iii)] Adiponitrile is prepared by passing either a mixture of ammonia and vaporized adipic acid, or a vaporized ammoniated adipic acid compound, e.g. an amide, imide, or ammonium salt, over a catalyst comprising a compound of boron and phosphorus at an elevated temperature, preferably between 300‹ and 550‹ C. Pressures which are higher or lower than atmospheric may be used. Examples are given of the preparation of the catalyst and of adiponitrile from adipic acid and ammonia. Instead of adipic acid, its esters, #-cyanovaleric acid, adipamic acid or #-cyanovaleramide may be used. Specification 494,236 is referred to.
