Abstract
535,178. Chlorinating titanium ores. PITTSBURGH PLATE GLASS CO. Aug. 29, 1939, No. 24802. Convention date, June 30. Drawings to Specification. [Class 1 (iii)] In the chlorination of ilmenite or other material containing titanium or iron to produce a mixture of chloride vapours, the major portion of the iron chloride is condensed with a quantity of titanium chloride (preferably at least 15 per cent.) sufficient to ensure the elimination of the major portion of the iron chloride and thus to prevent plugging of the system. The condensed mixture may be heated in the presence of a portion of the uncondensed vapour or of chlorine to re-volatilize the titanium chloride. The heating may be effected in a part of the condenser itself; in this case a long condenser is used in the first part of which the chlorides condense on to a conveyer belt which carries them to the further end of the chamber, where a suitable heating means operates. The residual iron chloride falls to the floor of the chamber and is moved by scrapers to a discharge opening. The invention is particularly applicable to the chlorination process described in Specification 535,179. Specifications 533,378 and 533,379 also are referred to.
