[Class 59] In grinding apparatus wherein the material to be ground, e.g. sulphur, is thrown by centrifugal force against impact or grinding surfaces, a vertical shaft 15 carries superposed spaced rotatable discs 18 alternately disposed with respect to superposed spaced fixed discs 17, and material fed to the uppermost rotatable disc from a feed shoot 43 is thrown against an impact or surface shell 16, falls on to the stator disc below, and passes by the central opening therein on to the next rotatable disc lower down; the stator discs are carried by the shell 16 and all these parts are gradually raised and then suddenly dropped under the action of a slowly rotated cam 2:1. The upper discs 17 carry upstanding bands or barriers 37, Fig. 9, and depending walls 32, the walls 32 being fitted with ribs 33 and with adjustable bands 35 of aluminium or other non-sparking material. Each disc 17 is made of three segments with their abutting edges secured or clamped together as by spring fingers. and each segment of the lowermost disc 17 has an opening for the passage of ground material to a discharge funnel 25. An apron 27 fastened to the lower edge of the shell 16 is lined with easily frangible material, such as paper, normally to close holes in the apron. Spaced vertical ribs 30, preferably of angle iron. are secured to the interior surface of the shell 16 between the discs 17. Between the ribs the shell is lined with burred metal strips 31 to provide a rough or abrading surface; similar burred strips are provided on the stationary discs as at 34, 38, 39, 40. The bands 37 serve to pile up sulphur, to retain large particles, to catch foreign material, such as iron, and to conduct away from the interior of the apparatus heat generated in grinding. The ribs 30, 33 as well as the burred surfaces 31, 34, 38, 39, 40 serve as supports upon which sulphur accumulates as a hard, rough crust yielding an effective attrition surface.
