Abstract

535,002. Electron beam valves and circuits therefor. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd., and BANKS, G. B. Jan. 30, 1940, No. 1880. [Classes 39 (i) and 40 (v)] A frequency multiplier comprises an electron beam valve E with a plurality of electron guns equal to the multiplying factor, each gun comprising a cathode 1, 1a, a control electrode 2, 2a and an accelerating electrode 3, 3a. The control electrodes are energized in different phases, and as shown are connected to opposite wires of a Lecher pair 5 energized by the input circuit 9. A burst of electrons is thus caused in each beam for every cycle of the input frequency, so that in the case shown there are two bursts for each cycle. As these bursts pass through apertured plates 7a, 7b, charges are induced thereon. These plates are spaced apart and are connected to form part of a resonant structure 11 tuned to the multiple frequency, which is taken off by a coupling 10. The spacing of the plates 7a, 7b is such that each burst of electrons passes the plate 7b half a period of the multiple frequency later than it passes the plate 7a. A tapped delay network may replace the Lecher pair 5. The electron streams may be focussed by coils 8, and the electrons collected by an electrode 4. The resonators 5, 11 may be situated within the envelope. Two or more of the frequency multipliers may be connected in cascade.
