Abstract
534,743. Catalytic apparatus. BOUVERIE, C. PLEYDELL-, and LUCAS, O. D. Nov. 6, 1939, No. 27390. [Class 1 (i)] Catalytic apparatus comprises a number of chambers arranged in parallel around a common inlet pipe, and a common outlet pipe formed within a tube which surrounds and bounds the chambers. In the preferred form, which is particularly suitable for converting naphthalene into phthalic anhydride, the catalyst is carried on perforated metal discs 16 (Fig. 2) strung on the inlet tube 10 and spaced apart by members 18 (Fig. 3). The assembly is surrounded by a tube 12 within which outlet channels are formed by notches 48 in the discs and spacers. The reaction space is divided at intervals into separate chambers by disc.; 36, each of which is provided with an inlet 20 and an outlet 34 through perforations in modified spacers 32. Several of the tubes 12 each containing chambers as described may be arranged between headers within a shell in which a heating or cooling medium is circulated. Specification 461,888 is referred to.
