Abstract
534,112. Starch conversion products. ROZENBROEK, M. D., and NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP CHEMISCHE FABRIEK SERVO. Dec. 27, 1939, No. 32922. Convention date, Dec. 27, 1938. [Class 121] The reaction of hypochlorites upon starch or starch products is effected by mixing starch in powder form with dry alkaline substances and treating the mixture with gaseous or liquid chlorine. The alkaline substances may be alkali metal hydroxides or carbonates, borax, trisodium phosphate, alkaline earth oxides, hydroxides or carbonates or zinc oxide. The alkaline substances may be added in stages and neutralized by chlorine before further addition. The starch may be rice, sago, maize, wheat or tapioca and may contain gluten as potato flour or wheat flour. The starch may be first dextrinized by roasting or by the processes described in Specification 544,245, or may be formed into cold soluble or swelling starch. The chlorinated product may be dextrinized or treated with oxidizing agents such as perborates or with enzymes. The starch may be first chlorinated by hypochlorite in solution, dried and mixed with dry alkali and treated with chlorine.
