Abstract
533,752. Internal pipe cutters. CUTHILL, J., and OIL WELL ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. Nov. 21, 1939, No. 30517. [Class 83 (iv)] A pipe cutter for severing well pipe comprises a body 2, 5 suspended in the well pipe 1 and fitted with pivoted cutters 22 having inwardly directed cam surfaces 28 engaged by means on a hydraulic piston 8 movable to cause outward movement of cutters to sever the pipe. The parts 2-5 of the body are screwed together at 6 and the part 5 forms the cylinder of the twopart piston 8, 10, which is fitted with a ball valve 15. A spring 11 normally maintains the piston in raised position. The body is longitudinally slotted to accommodate the cutters 22 which are hinged on a common pin 23. A spring 25 of U-shape normally maintains the cutters in collapsed position and a cross pin 26 prevents excessive outward movement of the cutters. In operation the cutter is lowered into the well and water pumped in to move the piston downwards. This causes a roller 27b on the piston to slide down the cam surfaces 28 while the tool is rotated until the pipe is severed. If desired the pump pressure may be further increased after the pipe is severed so as to rupture a closure disc 34 and allow liquid to escape from the interior of the pipe. If, after severing, the cutters fail to return a movement of the tool in either direction will cause the inclined surfaces 29 at the cutting edge to assist in collapsing the cutters.
