497,877. Expansible tools. MACCLATCHIE MANUFACTURING CO. OF CALIFORNIA. Nov. 23, 1937, No. 32276. Convention date, Nov. 30, 1936. [Class 85] An expanding tool for drilling wells &c. comprises a cutter movably mounted on a tool body with an axial bore, a mandrel slidable in the bore and a projection on the cutter extending into the mandrel, the mandrel contacting the projection to move the cutter on moving in one direction, while when the mandrel moves in the opposite direction, the cutter returns into the body by its own weight. The body 1 has cutters 7 pivoted at 8 in slots 4, and the mandrel 6 has an extension 6a with flats adjacent the cutters and apertures 10 through which lugs 11 on the cutters extend when the cutters are collapsed and the mandrel raised. A spring 30 presses the mandrel which carries a piston 17, a plug 20 restricting flow through the mandrel in its upper position. Pressure fluid supplied through the drill string depresses the mandrel and also passes through the latter to act on the lugs 11, whereby the cutters are expanded into contact with the wall of the well; the weight of the drill string completes the expansion of the cutters so that the lugs 11 are clear of the upper ends of the apertures 10, some of the pressure fluid passing through the apertures to below the cutters.
