Abstract

533,376. Sighting devices. BARR & STROUD, Ltd., and FRENCH, J. W. Aug. 28, 1939, No. 24636. [Class 97 (i)] In a sighting device wherein a transparent screen reflects a reference mark into the line of sight, the mark being illuminated by a lamp, a movable dimming screen having different translucencies at different parts is provided in the light path. The dimming screen may be in the form of a ring having a gap therein or of a flat strip, and may vary in translucency continuously or in steps. Fig. 1 shows a lamp C illuminating a graticule B below a collimeating lens A and transparent screen E. A dimming ring comprising coloured celluloid laminations 3, Fig. 3, in an annular head 2 rotatable by hand, surrounds the lamp. The laminations are of successively increasing lengths, are flush at one end, and leave a gap 5 in the ring. The ring may, alternatively, be formed by drilling an eccentric hole in a translucent cylinder, by variously colouring or coating a ring of uniform thickness, or by a combination of both methods.
