Abstract

533,294. Drilling-machines. BRITISH ENGINES, Ltd., and LAMB, H. T. Aug. 8, 1939, No. 22897. [Class 83 (iii)] In a mechanically-operated drill for use in coal mines &c. the drill is fed along a support by an endless chain engaging a rack thereon. The support consists of a channel section bar 1 having side flanges 1a for engaging shoes 3a on the drill 3 and secured between the coal face 8 and a pit-prop &c. 6 by means of a screw 7 and an articulated abutment 5. A chain sprocket 9 is journalled between the side walls of the bar 1 and is adapted to be rotated for feeding the drill by a hand-operated ratchet lever. A chain 11 passes over the sprocket and over an idle sprocket 10 mounted on a bracket 13 which is adjustably secured to the bar 1 by studs 14 in order to vary the tension of the chain. A shallow trough 4 is secured within the bar 1 to support the upper run of the chain and maintain it in contact with a rack 16 attached to the drill 3. The flanges 1a are cut away at the rear end to allow insertion of the drill when a catch 22, pivoted to the bar at 20, is swung aside, a spring 23 maintaining the catch in position to limit the rearward motion of the drill when it is withdrawn from the coal face. A stop 19 limits the forward feed of the drill and a guide bush 17 for the cutter is attached to the bar 1 by a bracket.
