Abstract
533,197. Electrical precipitation apparatus. LODGE-COTTRELL, Ltd. (Research Corporation of New York.). Oct. 17, 1939, No. 28074. [Class 39 (i)] The gases under treatment are moistened in the treating chamber with a fine liquid spray, and a shield is so positioned as to prevent impingement of the spray on the discharge electrode. The horizontal flow type of apparatus, shown in Fig. 2, comprises parallel plate collecting electrodes 14 grounded through the casing 10, discharge electrodes 15, and nozzles 22 producing a fine liquid spray consisting of water, aqueous solutions or non-aqueous liquids such as oils. Shields 23 are disposed above the spaces between the collecting electrodes so as to cover the supports 16 of the discharge electrodes. These supports are carried by insulators in heated compartments at the sides of the casing, and have fine points or other attenuated discharge elements to prevent the deposit thereon of solid or liquid particles. The gas inlet and outlet are covered with perforated plates and a baffle plate 26 is provided in the hopper to provide uniform distribution of the gas flow. Arch-shaped members 27 straddle the supports 16 where they emerge from the inter-electrode spaces to provide a more uniform electric field at these points and prevent arcing. The shields 23 may be in the form of liquid reservoirs for flushing the collecting electrodes and may be supplied by the spray or by separate pipes. The invention is also described as applied to upward flow apparatus both of the plate and pipe types. In the modification shown in Fig. 6, the liquid spray is produced by two oppositely-rotating rollers 80 dipping into a liquid pool 81, and the spray is suppressed under the discharge electrodes 74 by shielding plates 82. Specification 504,396 is referred to.
