Abstract

532,566. Steering-mechanism for motor vehicles. MORRIS MOTORS, Ltd., and ISSIGONIS, A. A. Sept. 7, 1939, No. 25365. [Class 79 (v)] Relates to steering-mechanism of the kind in which the steering shaft is connected to the road wheels through a rack and pinion. According to the invention, a frictional damping device is associated with the rack, and the steering shaft has torsional flexibility, in order to minimize the transmission of shock or vibrations from the road wheels to the driver. A pinion on the lower end of the shaft engages a rack a, Fig. 2, which slides in a housing b that prevents lateral movement of the rack relatively to the pinion. A plunger d is mounted at right angles to the housing and is pressed against the rack by a spring e. Both plunger and spring are contained in a hollow cup f which preferably screws into a boss g in the housing, the damping effect of the plunger being adjustable by means of the cups. The steering shaft h, Fig. 3, is attached by a coupling i to the spindle of the pinion, and the shaft is sufficiently flexible to minimize shocks. Lateral stiffness is imparted to the shaft by enclosing it in a tube l the upper part of which is secured to the boss of the steering wheel while the lower end is supported rotationally on a spigot m on the coupling i. The upper part of the tube is supported in a bearing n which may consist of a block of rubber or resilient material having a metal bush through which the shaft passes.
