457,608. Vehicle spring-suspensions; arrangement of wheels. NORTH, O. D., 76, Elm Park Mansions, Park Walk, Chelsea, and HUGH, P. G., and SCAMMELL LORRIES, Ltd., 52, High Holborn, both in London. May 14, 1935, No. 14125. [Class 108 (ii)] . In a single front-steering wheel the wheel is supported by a vertical column which is mounted in brackets on the vehicle frame and provided with shock absorbers yieldingly opposing the upward displacement of the wheel. The wheel 1 is carried by an arm 2 secured at its upper end to a shaft 3 rotatably mounted in a sleeve casing 4 provided with liners 5. The casing is carried by two brackets 9, 10 from the vehicle frame 8, friction material 16 being disposed between the casing 4 and the brackets. In addition the casing 4 at the upper bracket position is provided with an integral pressure plate 11 against which is adapted to be pressed a hinged plate 12, friction material 16a being interposed, while a curved hinged plate 14 is also adapted to be pressed against the casing at the lower bracket position, friction material 16b being interposed. The plates 12, 14 are pressed by means of wedges 17 and balls 18, the inner ends of the wedges being linked to the ends of a rocking leaf spring. Shock absorbing means 23 comprising rubber buffers 23a, 23b united by a plate 24 is interposed between an abutment 26 on the casing and the upper bracket 9. The shaft 3 is rotated for steering by worm 28 and worm wheel and transmitting rod from the steering columns. Specification 457,607 is referred to.
