[Class 52 (iv)] A spring-filled flexible or foldable mattress for use with a bedstead having side frame members 23, Fig. 2, comprises a number of upright helical springs 10 arranged in parallel rows across the mattress and having circular connections at the ends articulately connected with adjacent rows, the bottom convolutions of a number of rows being connected to comparatively rigid transverse members 12 resting on the frame members 23 to support the weight of the user. The articulated connection between the rows is provided by an interlacing of small helical coils 11 extending across the mattress, and the bottom convolutions of the springs 10 are secured to the transverse members 12 by staples 14. The transverse members 12 instead of being secured by staples may be located in pockets formed in a fabric casing 22. Instead of using transverse members 12, rods or tubes 32, Fig. 5, may be passed through the small helical coils 27 which interlace the bottom convolutions of the springs 10. In a further modification, Fig. 7, the transverse members 31 are cranked in order to provide a deep mattress without unduly increasing the overall height of the bed, the interior springs 29 being longer than the side springs 30. Padding 19 may be arranged over the upper convolutions of the springs. Studs 26 locate the mattress on the bedstead frame. The edges of the mattress may be stiffened by metal strip 24, Fig. 2, which is however sufficiently flexible to permit the mattress to be folded up.
